Dubai in winter is a shopping city with the air conditioning switched off: the malls are as vast as ever, but from November to March the outdoor souks, the waterfront promenades and the Christmas markets are where you actually want to be. This page is the map. It covers the five malls worth a visit, the souks old and new, the outlets, every Christmas market and festive event held in a mall, and the Dubai Shopping Festival – with a detailed page for each of the big ones.
The big malls, and why to go in winter
Dubai Mall
The largest mall in the world, next to Burj Khalifa: 1,200 shops, the aquarium, the ice rink, KidZania and the Dubai Fountain outside. In December: a giant tree, The Grotto with Santa and festive ice sessions. Go for the fountain evenings at 22°C.
Mall of the Emirates
The winter mall – Ski Dubai with real snow, two Santa grottos in December (one on the snow, one in the theatre), Magic Planet and a metro station at the door. The Kempinski next door has rooms overlooking the slope.
Dubai Festival City Mall
Waterfront mall on the Creek with the free IMAGINE laser and water show every evening and one of the city’s biggest Christmas markets on Festival Bay. Ten minutes from the airport, no crowds.
Souk Madinat Jumeirah
Not a mall but the prettiest place to shop: lantern-lit alleys, abras on the waterways, restaurants with Burj Al Arab views, and the most popular Christmas market in Dubai through December.
Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Hills Mall and the rest
See the section further down for the malls that are worth a detour rather than a day: Ibn Battuta’s themed courts, Dubai Hills Mall’s indoor roller coaster, Nakheel Mall on the Palm and City Walk’s open-air streets.
The souks: gold, spice, textile and Madinat
The souks of Old Dubai – the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira, the Textile Souk in Bur Dubai, linked by the one-dirham abra across the Creek – are the city’s original shopping district and the one place where you are expected to haggle. Winter afternoons from 16:00 are the time; a guided walking tour with tastings or a dinner dhow cruise is the way to do it the first time. Souk Madinat Jumeirah is the modern, fixed-price version with the Christmas market.
Outlet shopping
The bargains are at the edges of the city: The Outlet Village near Dubai Parks and Dubai Outlet Mall on the Al Ain road sell last-season stock from the mall brands at 30–70 percent off, with extra discounts during the Dubai Shopping Festival. The Outlet Village is the pleasant half-day; Dubai Outlet Mall has the deeper cuts.
Christmas markets and festive events in the malls
Almost every mall does something in December. These are the ones worth planning around – dates for 2026/27 are expected, based on last season, until the organisers confirm.
| Where | Event | Expected dates | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Souk Madinat Jumeirah | Madinat Jumeirah Christmas Market | early–end December | free |
| Dubai Festival City Mall | Christmas Market on Festival Bay | mid-December – early January | free |
| Mall of the Emirates | Winter Wonderland at Ski Dubai | 1–25 December | from AED 160 |
| Mall of the Emirates | The Grotto – meet Santa in Candyland | 6–25 December | AED 120 / 165 |
| Dubai Mall | Christmas at Dubai Mall and The Grotto: Dear Santa | 6 December – 5 January | free / AED 99–149 |
| Nakheel Mall | Winter Wonderland at Nakheel Mall | mid-December – early January | free |
| Emirates Towers | Winter District | mid–late December | free |

Dubai Shopping Festival 2026/27
The Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) is the reason serious shoppers come in winter: a month of city-wide sales, daily raffles with cars and gold as prizes, fireworks, drone shows and late opening. The 31st edition ran from 5 December 2025 to 11 January 2026; the 2026/27 edition is expected in the same window, mid-December to mid-January, with dates announced in the autumn. The malls above all take part; the outlets stack DSF discounts on top of their own.
More malls worth a detour
Ibn Battuta Mall (red line, Ibn Battuta station) is themed on the explorer’s travels – a Persian court, a Chinese junk, an Egyptian hall – and runs free festive shows with Nickelodeon characters in December. Dubai Hills Mall has The Storm Coaster, the fastest vertical-launch indoor roller coaster in the world, and a good food hall. Nakheel Mall on the Palm has The View at The Palm observation deck and a Swarovski Christmas tree. Dubai Marina Mall is small but sits on the Marina walk. City Centre Mirdif is the locals’ mall with a Santa’s grotto. City Walk and Bluewaters are open-air shopping streets rather than malls – perfect at 24°C, pointless in August. Wafi Mall, Egyptian-themed, hosts Wafi’s Whimsical Wonderland with Santa each December. We add detailed pages for these after the season.
Practical: opening hours, metro and tax-free shopping
Malls open around 10:00 and close between 22:00 and 01:00, later on Thursday to Saturday and through December; Friday mornings are quiet everywhere except the souks, which open late that day. The red metro line serves Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and Ibn Battuta directly; the green line serves the old souks. Tourists reclaim the 5 percent VAT on purchases of AED 250 or more: ask for a tax-free tag at the till and validate at the airport kiosks before check-in. Most malls have free parking; taxis queue at closing time, so leave before the last fountain show or walk to the metro.
Where to stay for shopping
Downtown for Dubai Mall (our picks), Al Barsha for Mall of the Emirates and the ski slope (our picks), Deira for the souks and the lowest rates (our picks), or Festival City for the airport and the Creek. Or compare all Dubai hotels on Booking.com – for Christmas week and New Year, book by October.
Good to know
Dubai Mall for scale and attractions, Mall of the Emirates for Ski Dubai and winter atmosphere, Dubai Festival City for the evening show and the Christmas market. For souvenirs and atmosphere, the souks beat all of them.
Expected mid-December 2026 to mid-January 2027; the last edition ran 5 December 2025 – 11 January 2026. Dates are confirmed in the autumn.
Yes, both are normal shopping days with regular or extended hours. Some malls close early on New Year’s Eve around fireworks areas.
Dubai charges 5 percent VAT, which tourists can reclaim on purchases of AED 250 or more at participating shops via the Planet Tax Free kiosks at the airport.
Souk Madinat Jumeirah and Dubai Festival City Mall have the two big free markets; Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall have Santa grottos; Nakheel Mall and Emirates Towers run smaller winter events.
