Abu Dhabi day trip: Sheikh Zayed Mosque & Louvre from Dubai

An hour and a half down the coast lies a very different Emirates: quieter, greener, and home to two buildings worth the trip on their own. A day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi combines the snow-white Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – with the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet under your feet – and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, where Jean Nouvel’s dome scatters sunlight like rain over the galleries.

What a typical day looks like

Tours pick you up at your Dubai hotel around 8:00–9:00. First stop is the Grand Mosque (about an hour, with a guide explaining the 82 domes and the Swarovski chandeliers), then lunch, then two hours inside the Louvre where you explore at your own pace. Most tours add a drive past Emirates Palace and the Corniche before dropping you back in Dubai by early evening. Total: 7 to 9 hours.

Winter is the right season

The mosque’s white marble courtyard is an oven in summer – in December it is simply dazzling. Winter light also does the Louvre’s “rain of light” dome justice. If you are in Dubai over the festive weeks, this is the classic day out when you want a change of pace from the malls and beaches.

Dress code and practicalities

The mosque enforces a strict dress code: shoulders, arms and legs covered for everyone, and a headscarf for women. Wear something loose and light – you will be walking on marble in the sun. The Louvre has no dress code. Bring your passport or Emirates ID; tours occasionally pass a checkpoint.

Prices and booking

Guided day tours from Dubai including transport, mosque visit and Louvre entry start around AED 250–350 per person, with lunch-included options slightly higher (checked July 2026). Both sights are free-flowing on weekdays; Fridays change the mosque’s visiting hours, so most tours run Saturday to Thursday.

Good to know

Can I do Abu Dhabi independently?

Yes – there is an intercity bus from Ibn Battuta (red line), but between the mosque, the Louvre and Saadiyat Island you will spend a lot on taxis. For a first visit the organised day tour is the easier sum.

Is one day enough?

For the two headliners, yes. If you also want Ferrari World or Qasr Al Watan, consider a second day – or check our other day trips from Dubai.

Is the Louvre Abu Dhabi like the Paris Louvre?

It is its own museum with loans from French institutions: smaller, calmer and arranged by theme rather than region. The building alone justifies the ticket.
